Practice exams

How do the practice exams work?

Each exam has the same length and pass mark as the knowledge test in the model CDL manual:

  • General Knowledge: 50 questions
  • Air Brakes: 25 questions
  • Combination Vehicles: 20 questions
  • Hazardous Materials: 30 questions
  • Tank Vehicles, Doubles and Triples, Passenger Vehicles, School Bus: 20 questions each

80% is a pass. The timer is optional and starts off; turn it on before an exam if you want the pressure. When you finish, you see your score and can go through every question you missed, with its explanation, then retry just the ones you got wrong (free in General Knowledge, with Pro in the other sections).

What does "Ready" mean?

A section shows Ready when your last three exams in that section all scored 80% or better. It is a sign that you know the material well, not a promise about the real test. Keep reading the manual sections for your weak topics.

What is free, and what does Pro add?

Free, with no account and no ads: the whole General Knowledge section, and one full practice exam in every other section. Mistake review after an exam is always free.

Pro ($19.99, one time): all sections and endorsements, unlimited exams, retrying missed questions in every section, the weak-topic marathon, and a progress PDF you can save or print. The widgets (readiness, a question of the day and your streak) are free. There is no subscription and no trial timer.

Your state and your manual

My state's rules or manual are different. Which is right?

Your state's CDL manual. Most states publish a manual based on the same model CDL manual, but each state can add its own rules (for example license classes, age limits, medical rules, fees or which tests you take) and can number some sections slightly differently.

Fifth Wheel covers the knowledge in the model manual and leaves out rules that only apply in one state. Every explanation shows both the section number and its title, like "CDL Manual §5.3.3 Step 7 Final Air Brake Check". If the number in your state's manual is different, look for the same title.

Fifth Wheel is a study aid. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by FMCSA, AAMVA or any state DMV or licensing agency. Requirements vary by state — check your state's CDL manual.

Are these the questions from my state's test?

No. We write our own questions and explanations and check them against public state CDL manuals. We cite section numbers and titles, but we don't reproduce manual text. The questions practice the same knowledge the manual teaches, which is what the written tests are about.

Questions and mistakes

I think a question or explanation is wrong. How do I tell you?

Thank you, this helps everyone who studies with the app. In the app, open the question and tap Report a problem with this question. It opens an e-mail that already has the question id, so just say what looks wrong.

From this page, use this button and fill in the template:

E-mail a question report

Subject: Question report

Question id (for example ab-0042):
What looks wrong:
Your state (optional):
Manual section you checked (optional):

If you don't have the question id, tell us the section and the first few words of the question instead. We check every report against the manuals and fix confirmed mistakes in an update.

Purchases

How do I restore Pro on a new iPhone or iPad?
  1. Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account you used to buy Pro.
  2. In Fifth Wheel, go to Settings → Restore Purchases.

Pro unlocks again at no charge. If nothing is found, check that you're signed in with the right Apple Account.

How do I get a refund?

Apple processes all App Store payments, so refunds go through Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com. We can't issue refunds ourselves. Pro is a one-time purchase, so there is nothing to cancel.

Your progress

How does iCloud sync work?

Your progress and exam history are kept on your device and synced through your own private iCloud, so they appear on a new iPhone or iPad signed in to the same Apple Account. There is no Fifth Wheel account, and we can't see your data.

If progress doesn't appear: check that iCloud is on for Fifth Wheel in iOS Settings → [your name] → iCloud, that both devices use the same Apple Account, and that you have some free iCloud storage. Sync can take a few minutes.

Does it work without a signal?

Yes. All questions, explanations and the pre-trip checklist are inside the app, so everything works offline, at a truck stop or in a training yard. iCloud catches up when you're back online.

How do I delete my progress?

Delete the app to remove everything stored on your device. To remove the iCloud copy too, go to iOS Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Fifth Wheel and delete its data.
